Elizabeth “Libby” Schwaner, a Master in Public Policy student at the Carsey School, discusses the project she worked on that earned her a silver award at this year’s University of New Hampshire Sustainability Awards, held in May.
Libby, who is also a 2020 Carsey School Nordblom fellow, advocated for the enactment of Indigenous Peoples’ Day in communities across New Hampshire and the importance of representation in recognizing Indigenous peoples. In doing so, she helped change Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples’ Day in Exeter and other towns and conducted a series of interviews with Indigenous people and local lawmakers to detail why and how Indigenous Peoples’ Day should be implemented.
