Carsey School faculty member Denise Viera, a senior advisor in the U.S. Department of Justice, joins Master in Community Development (MCD) Program Director Michael Swack for a discussion about her January 2021 course, Public Safety and Community Development.
Denise Viera has worked for the Justice Department since 2011, when she started as Deputy Director for the Community Capacity Development Office. Since then, she’s led grantmaking efforts for more than 300 public safety/neighborhood revitalization areas nationwide; increased access for financial resources and financing tools for underserved communities; and worked to develop local, state and national policy in the areas of community economic development, housing finance, fair housing, provision of housing and other support resources for victims of domestic violence and previously incarcerated people. In her current role, she focuses on increasing public safety in distressed U.S. communities.
