EXSC607 - Biology of Aging

This course is intended to meet the needs of diverse majors. This is a biological sciences discovery course. It is designed to provide students with a brief review of the normal structure and function of the organ systems of the body coupled with age-related changes and dysfunctions within each system. Various theories regarding why the body ages and biological mechanisms of the aging process will also be addressed.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: At the completion of this course, the student should demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of: 1. The various theories of aging 2. The basic structure and function of the body systems and the aging process within each system 3. Specific chronic and acute diseases associated with aging 4. Influence of diet and exercise on the aging process 5. Various health and social changes throughout the lifespan 6. Potential future developments in the prevention of aging.
