Envisioning (and Shaping) High Latitude Futures
November 7, 2018 at the University of New Hampshire
Abstract: In this talk, I will first give examples of recent work in my group on extreme events (especially how joint extreme high temperature and humidity events differ from 'temperature-only' extremes) and their impacts (including a recent paper linking cold extremes in the northeast U.S. to the northward advance of the southern pine beetle). Second, I will also discuss global climate model (GCM) limitations in developing risk management decision frameworks, and how diverse types of information can be integrated to augment GCM-based approaches. Finally, I will opine about adaptation and climate policy initiatives that are receiving increasing attention, especially managed retreat and the potential for fossil fuel emitter liability for climate damages, respectively.
